Version 2.2 is the first significant revision of Pegasus Mail/Mac in nearly two years; we apologise to our users for the long delay between updates, but the last two years have been turbulent times for developers of Macintosh software and we have been more affected than most by many of the ongoing issues.
We are committed to maintaining Pegasus Mail for the Macintosh, and hope eventually to bring its feature set fully into line with the Windows version of Pegasus Mail. To this end, version 2.2 can be seen as a major step forward.
Most sites should find version 2.2 significantly more stable than previous versions of Pegasus Mail, and there have been significant enhancements to the capabilities it offers:
* Mail filtering rules: Pegasus Mail/Mac now supports automated processing of your mail at the same level as the Windows version of Pegasus Mail. You can define rules that move messages, highlight them in particular colours, send files, and add or remove the sender from a mailing list. See "Mail filtering rules" on the "File" menu for this feature.
* Significantly improved handling of MIME messages: Pegasus Mail/Mac now incorporates a full Multipart MIME browser, allowing you to work with multipart messages, including MIME digests.
* Support for recently-used addresses: the addressing fields in the message editor now have buttons marked "*" to their right: clicking these buttons brings up a list of addresses you have used recently.
* Drag and drop: you can now drag and drop messages between folders, and can drag addresses from your address books to the address fields of any message. What's more, you can drag a mail message from any folder, drop it onto your address book and the address book will automatically open an entry with all the sender's information pre-entered. Now that we finally have good tools for this, we expect that the drag and drop capabilities of the program will be heavily enhanced in upcoming releases.
* Revised user interface: the look and feel of the program has been heavily improved, including a toolbar in the main window, and extensive use of grey areas to enhance and highlight windows.
* Address book completely revamped: the address book has been completely redeveloped and is now considerably more useful than previously, without sacrificing compatibility with existing books.
* Save desktop state: there is now a preferences option that tells Pegasus Mail to remember which windows were open at the end of the last session and to reopen them at the start of each new session. See "General settings" on the "Preferences" submenu of the "File" menu.
There are also many other small changes and fixes that we hope will improve your enjoyment of the program.
We expect version 2.2 to be the first of a number of releases of Pegasus Mail/Mac in 1997: we have a long to-do list of neat features and capabilities to add and we intend to bring out regular updates as we make each improvement. Send a message to listserv@ua1vm.ua.edu containing the single line "SUB PM-NEWS Firstname Lastname", replacing "Firstname" and "Lastname" with your first and last name. So, if you are John Smith, you would send a message containing the single line "SUB PM-NEWS John Smith".
